Zen Mocha Latte Recipe

My Zen Mocha Latte recipe has become part of my morning ritual because it not only tastes delicious, it also fuels my body, helps to reduce cravings, burns fat, reduces stress & anxiety, and so much more. So how can a cup of coffee provide ALL those benefits? In this post, I’ll explain the benefits of all the ingredients I use + how you can make your own Zen Mocha Latte.

Zen Mocha Latte Ingredients

It’s frothy, decadent without being too sweet, while also providing numerous health benefits.

Most of these benefits (and the name) come from Zen Blend.

Zen Blend was created by my friends over at Potentia Wellness. It is a blend of different medicinal mushrooms and herbs (reishi, cordyceps, & bacopa) plus they’ve added magnesium to the formula. All of these components are designed to help the body adapt better to stress.

I’ve been adding Zen Blend to my coffee daily for about a month now, so here are my thoughts on this product:

The taste is way better than I expected! I’ve tried medicinal mushroom supplements in the past, and they have all tasted bitter & like dirt. To overcome the bitter taste of these extracts, Zen Blend is in a base of organic cocoa. Adding it to my Bulletproof coffee made it taste even better!

I started to notice Zen Blend working right away. This is because of the magnesium in this product. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer, which immensely helps with anxiety. It also improves mood and helps to decrease stress. Over time, the reishi, cordyceps, & bacopa kick in. These extracts are adaptogenic, which means they allow the body to adapt better to stress. This means decreased feelings of anxiety, more energy, less irritability, etc. These medicinal mushrooms provide SO many more health benefits, too many to list in this post, but if you’re interested go check out Potentia’s instagram page for all the info!

I’m really impressed with the quality of Zen Blend. For example, the medicinal mushrooms that they use (reishi and cordyceps) are certified organic and 100% fruiting body extracts. So I didn’t know this before, but apparently a common practice for low quality products is to use the Mycelium (the “roots” of the mushroom) or a blend of the mushroom, mycelium, and growth medium. This is really important since the research demonstrating the benefits of these mushrooms comes from utilizing the fruiting body.

Zen Blend Alternative

If you don’t want to use Zen Blend, then I recommend using organic raw cacao powder in the Zen Mocha Latte Recipe. You can grab a big, 1 lb bag on Amazon (for about $12) and enjoy all of this superfood’s nutrient-dense benefits not only in your coffee, but also in smoothies and desserts! It is slightly bitter in taste (think dark chocolate!).

So can you just use cocoa powder? I wouldn’t recommend it. Raw cacao powder has not been processed like cocoa powder, so it retains its nutritional value with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. There are no hidden sugars, hydrogenated oils (yuck), or other additives. Just raw cacao powder with natural sources of magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and more.

What is Brain Octane Oil?

Another key ingredient in the Zen Mocha Latte that provides a ton of benefits is Brain Octane Oil.

Brain octane oil is 100% caprylic acid triglycerides from coconut oil. Caprylic acid, a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), is an energizing, easy-to-digest quality fat. Brain octane oil turns into ketones, which suppress ghrelin (signals hunger) and enhance CCK (signals fullness). The ketones from brain octane oil also increase your metabolic rate, decrease the amount of fat you store, and burn the fat you already have. Lastly, the ketones from brain octane oil readily pass the blood brain barrier (BBB), providing your neurons with almost immediate access to energy. This helps to clear brain fog and promotes mental clarity.

Why should I add ghee to my coffee?

Adding grass-fed ghee or grass-fed butter to your coffee provides you with healthy fat that is going to help keep you feeling full longer!

If it sounds unappealing to put butter in your coffee, I understand - I thought the same thing at first! However, I can definitely say that once you blend it with your coffee and brain octane oil, it froths really well and tastes just like a latte! Plus, grass-fed ghee/butter provides a ton of health benefits. For example, grass-fed butter is a rich source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a beneficial fatty acid linked to fighting cancer, preventing bone loss, and helping your body build muscle rather than store fat. Grass-fed butter also supports heart health because it is rich in antioxidants, good cholesterol, and saturated fats, and it contains several nutrients that protect against heart disease, like vitamins A, D, E, K2, and iodine, lecithin, and selenium. Lastly, grass-fed butter contains the short chain fatty acid butyrate, which has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, and greatly increase fat burning and mitochondrial activity in mouse studies.
